Dead Cat Stalks New Game

A dramatization of the Jaguar’s time on the market

Remember the Jaguar? I do: I bought one the day it was first available and I actually enjoyed Cybermorph (like, a lot) as well as the immortal Tempest 2K, but there is still a thriving fandom making new games for the machine and here’s one of the latest:

Apparently this is a port from an Atari ST game which, in some roundabout way, makes sense given the lineage of both machines, at least from a branding standpoint, if not a tech one, and I do quite like the very high speed scrolling and lots of lovely parallax whipping by in the background, though I have no idea at all if it’s actually any good.

sh3-rg–in the comments–points out that this is based on his original ST game from 2002:

Wait, the Jaguar has a fanbase?

Yep I’m one of those Jag fans, I hang out on Jaguar Sector 2 occasionally where there is a strange and nerdly dramatic history surrounding developments on the Jaguar. fighting between various developers and all that. But there are still a few developments out there, including Death Tongue which uses the JagDoom engine which another team finally managed to crack. Robinson’s Requiem is supposed to come out someday for it too, a completed version was found and sold to a Jag developer but he’s been sitting on it for a couple of years now for some reason, even though it’s ready to go.

You’d think, in a community that small, there’d be *less* potential for drama 😦

Unfortunately no. I hear it’s somewhat like the Neo Geo community. It’s usually just developers quarreling – for example, the guys who did this Superfly thing and a guy who did a conversion of the original Gorf for the Jag CD have sparred with each other on occasion, with the former going as far to mock the latter in one of their other projects. It’s all a bit silly but that’s how it is.

Here is another Jag related thing you might be interested in ECM. This guy is really pushing the Jaguar and making an RPG out of it.

You can see my original 2002 ST game here:

As for quarreling Jag devs, there is normally one common denominator… since he went silent, the Jag community has been in a renaissance period & has been much more productive & happy. All very civilised actually.

Ah, very interesting–thanks for pointing that out.

And I’ll keep an eye on that RPG, Shaggy–thanks.
