Snake’s on a (Space) Plane: Metal Gear & Space Manbow for MSX

OK, so the Kotaku-like headline probably had you hyper-ventilating for a nanosecond, but this MSX1 emulator, at least for me, is far better than any promise of Halo on DS:

• Compiled with devkitARM r30 and Libnds 1.4.3+.
• Fixed a bug in the management of color 0 for screen 6 mode.
• Added a filter to improve display quality of high resolution modes.
• There are now three sound modes (PSG at 40Khz, PSG+SCC at 22Khz, PSG+FM at 8Khz).
• Fixed the path of instant save file that was saved by mistake to the root.
• The selection of cartridges, MSX type and sound mode is blocked when the MSX is turned ON.
• Improved change of display mode.

This release brings it up to version 0.82 and it also supports MSX2 games–you can get the emulator here, but you will need to hunt down the various ROMs and BIOS files on your ownsome.

1 The MSX was a computer standard developed by Microsoft ‘back in the day’ that was popular mainly in Japan.

Huh. There’s only two MSX titles I’ve ever been interested in, but I am REALLY interested. May have to look into this despite my abhorrence for handhelds.

I always have to borrow one from a kid.

The emulator seems to run the old MSX games more reliably than older versions. Now if you’ll excuse me, Penguin Adventure is calling…

The early Aleste games are worth looking at too. There are quite a few games on the MSX that I’ve always wanted to play, and never got the chance to. This seems like a great time to get into the console.
